Splashing out for a special occasion, we decided to try Le Bistro for the first time. Unfortunately, the experience did not measure up to our expectations, in spite of the food which was very good. We found the atmosphere in the newly refurbished dining room sterile, and too brightly lit. The wisdom of having 2 walls of floor to ceiling windows is questionable when the view is directly onto street level, staring as we were at neon signs, parked cars and curious passing pedestrians. The service was efficient but affected and unsophisticated. It lacked the polish and subtlety that a restaurant of this class should offer its diners. And don't believe what they say on the website about a 42 euro menu! None of the staff seemed to have heard of it. At 170 euros for two (no pre-dinner drinks, and just one bottle of the more modest wines), there are better restaurants at which to splash out in Chamonix.
